Huancayo

Hey what up? I made it to Huancayo!!! We are staying at the presidents house tonight and then tomorrow I will know my companion and area. The president and his wife are super super nice. Huancayo is super cool and a lot better than Lima. Depending on my area I could have up to an 8-ish hour bus ride tomorrow also. I love and miss you guys!!!!

A letter from Landon's mission president:

Dear Brother/Sister Corbett:

My wife and I are honored to have your son in the Peru Huancayo Mission. Thank you for supporting his far-reaching decision in the life to serve the Lord. Since his arrival to the mission on Tuesday, we have tried to get to know him more and more and offer him our help so that during the time of his missionary service he can enjoy the guidance of the spirit in his daily work and strengthen his confidence in God.

He has been assigned to be trained by Elder Arias, a good missionary chosen by the spirit of revelation to be the one who teaches and strengthens his learning in the first days of his mission. I will have interviews with him every six weeks to see his progress and support him in his needs. He has been assigned to work in the area called Mantaro in the city of Huancayo where we hope he can learn his first essential lessons.

We ask that through you weekly letters, you can include and encourage the principles of obedience and the continuous effort of overcoming trials through Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. Thank you again for your support. With much appreciation.

I'm a Missionary!!

What up everyone!

This week has been really good! As you can tell with my use of the exclamation point haha. So we weren't able to teach the real people again because the girl wasn't feeling good. But they are seeing missionaries and are very interested in the Book of Mormon! It was sad that we didn't get to see them again, but Saturday made up for it.

On Saturday we went out proselyting with missionaries in the field. I was nervous for it all week because I would be greeting and having conversations with natives who don't know any English. But it went well and was a big confidence boost for my Spanish. Shoutout to the Gift of Tongues. Anyways, we drove for about an hour and a half outside of Lima. I don't know what town we were in, but it was in the Lima East mission and it was DEFINITELY not in the city. It was super dusty and hot there. And there were dogs, if you could call them that....everywhere. The first thing I noticed was that the missionaries shoes were covered in a layer of dirt and dust. Anyways, I was paired with a cool missionary whose name I fogot, and another dude going to Huancayo with me! So we just went out and walked around and talked with everyone we met. The roads were dirt and everything was different. It felt like I was on a completely different world, like one of the star wars sand planets.

Most of the people we talked to were nice and a only a couple ignored us. I also understood a lot of Spanish, but not enough. The first attempts were a little awkward but after that it went smoothly. We were all given a Book of Mormon to write our testimony in and hand out. The guy I gave mine to was super chill. We talked for a good minute and I shared with him one of my favorite scriptures in the Book of Mormon (Helaman 5:12). Then I showed him my testimony in the back of the book. He read it while I was there and asked when I would be able to come back to teach him. It was sad that I would never be able to do that. The missionary I was with wasn't from this specific area either so we couldn't do much. We were able to tell him where the church was though. Anyways this proselyting activity has made me super excited to go out and leave the CCM! I still have a lot to learn, but I'm ready to full send the mission!

Also I can finally read and understand 95 percent of my Spanish kids Book of Mormon picture book so YEET. Next Tuesday I have an 8 hour bus ride to Huancayo where I've heard we get to 17,000 ft elevation and also people pass out on this ride because of the elevation change. I'm not sure how true this is, but I'll let you know next time I email. Also I don't know if I will be able to email next week because of the exchange, so if I don't email I'm not dead.

Love Y'All!!!!!!!!

I'm at my one month mark!

Wow another week has gone by! I didn't think a lot happened this week because we do the same thing every day, but a lot has happened actually. The new shipment of missionaries came in. One guy played lacrosse in high school in Utah. I forgot the name of his school but it's fun to talk with him.

Spanish has been up and down this week. Sometimes I feel great about it. On Sunday for example, I blessed the sacrament, then later was called up to give a talk on charity and love. Then our district of 10 sang the intermediate hymn. You could say my back was pretty tired from carrying the sacrament meeting....just kidding. But all of this was in Spanish so I felt good. But then other days I don't understand things that the people we teach are saying. I can talk and read well enough but listening is a struggle. But it will come with time.

Saturday was a cool day because our teacher brought her cousin who is inactive, and her cousin's boyfriend who isn't a member. And we got to teach them! It was fun to teach real people and they were super cool and nice. The girlfriend is pregnant and I shared a scripture about how God's love is like a mother's but better. I think it really touched her! We get to teach them again this week so fingers crossed haha.

So....I've gained some weight here which is good! None of the waists on my pants can button except for my suit pants. I just hide it with my belt haha, but sometimes you can still see it. My district has started throwing out fat jokes at me, but don't worry, I won't let myself get a dad bod. In South America it isn't rude to call people fat or call them out for eating a lot. My teacher called me gordito haha because of my pants. Lots of bread and less physical activity = weight gain.

Every day we wake up and get ready, study, breakfast, grammar, missionary improvement, practice teaching, language study, lunch, study, physical activity, shower, study, more coaching missionary, more grammar, dinner, daily planing, practice teach, then bed. Haha Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays are my favorite because they have a different schedule. Anyways, I'd love to hear from you all and hope you're doing great! Plus I'm at my month mark so YEET!

P.S. If you need something to study, study Alma 24 and how freaking dope the Anti-Nephi-Lehies are!

Halfway through the CCM!

A lot has gone down. (kind of)

So I'll just start from after I emailed you last time. After emailing we had free time, played soccer, and then had dinner. During dinner, the President of the CCM took my companion to his office and told me to chill with the other elders in the cafeteria. I knew this was a possibility of happening because my companion has had lots of meetings with the president and was struggling hard core this week. Anyways, sorry for the sidenote, but my companion was sent home. It was actually really sad and I felt really bad for him, but he is on the right path that he needs to be. I made him promise me that by this time nexct year, that he would be back on the mission because he really wants to be. After that I felt way bad for any struggle I had with him. You truly can never judge anyone because you don't understand who they are and what they´ve been through.

Anyways, I'm in a trio now with Elder Passmore and Elder Spackman. They are both hard workers who know a lot more spanish than me and are good at soccer haha, so I have some work to do. But it is fun being with them. My old companion was the district leader, then Elder Passmore became the district leader when my companion left. Now at our 3 week mark, there have been leadership changes and now Elder Passmore is the zone leader and Elder Spackman is the district leader. haha So in 3 weeks I've had 3 companions and they've all been a district leader! I don't know what this is preparing me for lol. Anyways the people who were 3 weeks ahead of me in the CCM left today and it was actually sad. There were many great elders I'm going to miss, but the work moves on.

I hope you all are partying up your last month of summer!

Love, Landon

P.S. Sorry I forgot, but Fast Sunday is verrrrryyyyy long when you study from 7-9 and then have church meetings from 9- 6 pm...….then dinner.

Also yesterday I had 5 minutes to prep a 30 min Book of Mormon lesson, so I flipped until I found a chapter with a lot of markings in it. It was Alma 32 and it turned out to be a very good lesson! Everyone told me they used it to teach their investigators!

The Spirit, global domination, doorknob, and cholesterol

What is up everyone?!

This week went by crazy fast, but I don´t know how because we do the same thing every day. We had a couple of fire devotionals on the spirit and it is crazy how much it influences your life once you are not distracted and are looking for it.

On Thursday I spent all day in Interpol and immigration. We had to wake up at 5 for Interpol and that sucked. Immigration was an adventure. We drove for an hour and a half-ish and we were still in Lima. The roads are insane. Some of the roads don't have lanes so it feels like Mario Kart. When you are at a stop light vendors go into the road and try to sell you stuff. But the most annoying part is that most of the time instead of stop signs, they have these huge speed bumps in the roads. I don't know how cars survive here haha. Immigration was whack. we sat for 3 hours down in a parking garage. I met this funny elder from Argentina. He worked for the UN down there. One of the elders has been teaching him some English but tyrannical stuff. It's all a joke, but he says that he is going to take over the US, Canada, and Mexico. I was made his financial minister because I look smart lol.

My Spanish is coming along slowly but well. We taught our first not terrible lesson yesterday. I blessed the sacrament in Spanish on Sunday and it went smoothly. I taught my Bolivian roommates how to play doorknob. So you could say that my Spanish is progressing lol.

Also I've decided that my roommate is the offspring of Dwight Schrute and Napoleon Dynamite. My influence is showing at the CCM because of my contribution to the meals. We get unlimited rolls at each meal but they aren´t always warm. I came up with the idea of putting a plate of four-ish rolls in the microwave with about 3 packets of butter. You microwave it for about 45 seconds or until the butter is straight liquid. It soaks into your rolls and it is so good! Lol But rip my blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Anyways, I now have 23 months left, so see you soon!

Love, Landon

Photos are of my district and I at the temple, a view of the CCM, and a picture with this guy I knew from Close Up. P.S. He is really tall so it makes me look short.

21 Months and Over

Hey everyone! You might be surprised to see an email for me. I guess I want to do one last closing email. My last week in Peru was reall...
